1 Billion HSPA mobile broadband subscribers forecast
The GSMA who represent the interests of the worldwide mobile communications industry have forecasted that there will be 1 billion HSPA (3G mobile broadband) users by 2013. There are currently 150 million users and the subscription rate is growing on average by 100% each year. This growth rate outstrips other mobile technologies such as WiMax making HSPA the predominant mobile broadband technology.
The growth is re-inforcing itself in a cyclic pattern. The growing demand for mobile broadband means that there is more ability for operators to invest in improving the services and the technology. Economies of scale drive prices down which leads to more interest from consumers, a further increase in subscribers and so the cycle continues.
More details of the predictions are covered on commsday.
