Nexus One “superphone” launched, but not in Australia

As expected, Google launched the Nexus One phone at a press conference at their Mountain View headquarters.

The phone will be sold for $US529 outright or $US179 as part of a 2 year contract. However, Australia isn’t included on the list of countries in which the Nexus One will be available immediately. There is no information on when the new Google phone will be available in Australia. Google’s reason for the staggered release is “to gain user feedback internationally and ensure the ordering process works smoothly”. Vodafone will be selling the phone with a plan in Europe mid next year so it’s likely that Vodafone will also be the carrier offering the Nexus One here in Australia.

“Nexus One is an exemplar of what’s possible on mobile devices through Android – when cool apps meet a fast, bright and connected computer that fits in your pocket,” said Mario Queiroz, vice president of product management at Google.

“The Nexus One belongs in the emerging class of devices which we call ” superphones.” It’s the first in what we expect to be a series of products which we will bring to market with our operator and hardware partners and sell through our online store.”
