Research on Mobile Internet Usage in 16 Countries

Neilsen have published research into “the worldwide state of the mobile web”. Unfortunately their world didn’t include Australia. 16 countries were included but Australia wasn’t among them. New Zealand was however. Still, the overall findings and comments are relevant even if the research is US centric. Here’s a summary of the findings:

Who is using mobile Internet?

In spite of the image that mobile broadband belongs to geeky youths, there is actually almost an even split between those under 35 and those over 35. 56% are male and 44% are female.

What do people use mobile broadband Internet for?

In order by category, mobile Internet users are looking at carrier portals, sending and receiving email, browsing weather sites and news sites, using search engines, viewing maps, sports news, entertainment, videos and music.

What do people want from their mobile devices?

They want longer battery power, larger screen sizes, more memory capacity and better data inputs in that order.

What is the key driver for satisfaction?

The research pinpointed network quality as the key driver. It should be pointed out though that most of the participants had unlimited data plans. It’s probably fair to assume that cost of data would feature in any Australian survey.
